About the Event

Up to 35 five-member teams compete for prizes in a unique and fun two-day ski/snowboard event at Mt. Hood Meadows, raising money for hospice, cancer research, education and prevention programs.

You don't need to be an expert to participate. All ages and abilities are invited to join in, as the race is formatted to reward consistency, rather than speed.

Volunteer celebrity and professional coaches are on hand to coordinate teams and assist skiers with professional race tips and instructions.

Beneficiaries:

  • The Knight Cancer Institute - at Oregon Health & Science University - researching causes and cures for cancer as a designated National Cancer Institute.
  • Providence - Willamette Falls Hospice - providing home care for terminally ill patients and family support. OCSO is funding their "Children in Grief" program.
  • Candlelighters - a grass roots organization whose mission is one of support, education and advocacy for children with cancer and their families.
  • Selected programs - providing cancer education and early detection screenings for the public - especially those in need

How are Funds Raised?

 

In 1988, Larry Chadwick and a small group of friends started the Oregon Cancer Ski Out as a way to positively channel their sadness and frustration over the loss of loved ones to cancer.

The idea was to create an event that would benefit cancer research, hospice and cancer prevention programs. The event had to be meaningful, affordable and well organized, but above all, it had to be fun... serious fun!

The result was an innovative ski race with a team-based format that rewarded consistency, not speed, making it possible for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities to participate.

March 2010, marks the Ski Out's 22nd anniversary. Its success is largely due to the strong support of team participants and corporate sponsors who return year after year to experience the fun, camaraderie and opportunity to give that the Ski Out provides.
